Is social jetlag similar to travel-induced jetlag? Results of a validation study.

Abstract: Social jetlag (SJL) is defined as the misalignment between the biological clocks and the social clock imposed by work and social constraints. In order to accomplish the workdays duties, people tend to not respect the internally sleep-wake cycle during the week, often using alarm clock to wake-up, which would lead to a chronic form of travel-induced jetlag. This circadian misalignment has been found to be associated with increased health risk and health-impairing behaviors. In this cross-sectional study, we aim… Show more

“…In addition, Lang et al (2018) 53 found that 31.1% of Australian people have SJL > 1 h (n = 837; 18–75y). In Brazil, studies from our group with shift workers 54 , university students 55 , 56 and patients with chronic diseases 16 , 17 have followed the same pattern as in the other countries previously mentioned.…”

“…According to the results of multivariate analysis to identify independent factors associated with SJL the grade (β = −0.167; p = 0.004) and chronotype (β = −0.438; p < 0.001) negatively associated with students SJL score, but that "Spending time with television/computer/telephone in bed before sleeping" behavior (β = 0.127; p = 0.031) was found positvely associated ( SJL is defined as the disruption of the circadian rhythm involving misalignment between one's biological time and social program (Lewis et al, 2020;Tavares et al, 2020). In this study, students' average SJL value was determined as 2 h and 10 min.…”
