“…Intra-articular dysfunction of TMJ includes disc displacement with or without reduction which, if left untreated can progress to degenerative changes of the involved joint. Inflammation is one of the main cause among many underlying etiological factors that cause pain and dysfunction 2,10 . TMD patients have physical as well as psychological impact of the disease and their routine and quality of life is adversely affected 6,11,12 .…”

“…TMJ arthrocentesis is a minimally invasive treatment option between conservative management and invasive surgery. It is considered superior treatment option after the failure of conservative management of TMD patients 5,10,13 . It functions by flushing out inflammatory mediators, degraded proteins from superior joint space with sterile solution as they are the main cause of pain.…”

“…In the case of rinsing the joint cavity, attempts are also made to examine the differences between the following techniques: (1) two-needle; (2) two-way needle; (3) one-way needle (pumping technique) [20][21][22][23][24]. Furthermore, arthrocentesis protocols also differ in terms of the following: (1) the type of irrigant; (2) the volume of the rinsing agent; (3) single use or repetition of the intervention at different time intervals [17,23,25]. It is common to combine lavage with active substance administration in one intervention.…”

“…Repeated arthrocentesis proved to be more successful at reducing pain and improving MMO than a single intervention in the treatment of TMJ closed lock (24) . However, repeated injection of single corticosteroid injection was safe with the return of joint structures to its normal cellular structure after two weeks while double injection with six weeks apart resulted in irreversible damage to the components of the joint and three injections with six weeks apart resulted in massive destruction to most of the temporomandibular joint structures (25) .…”
