“…• Animal studies have defined EEN as nutrition initiating within 36 hours after surgical insult. Clinical data show that electromyogram activity of the intestine appears 4-8 hours after surgical insult, which should guarantee the safety of EEN [13]. As previously discussed, Gabor's study [9] further demonstrates the safety of EEN and shows that providing EN 6-hour post-operative does not contribute to medical risk.…”

“…Enteral feeding is useful not only for acute perioperative management [7], but for long-term palliative care [17], particularly for the patients with dysphagia. In the present case, PEG was placed in the early phase of the clinical course, and continuous enteral nutrition was quite effective not only for improving but for maintaining nutritional status before and after chemoradiation therapy.…”

“…Advanced esophageal carcinoma often causes esophageal stenosis and/or an esophagobronchial fi stula, with the inability to take food orally, and therefore therapeutic measures such as surgery and/or chemoradiation therapy occasionally cause malnutrition, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality [3][4][5][6]. In this regard, perioperative use of enteral nutrition has been shown to improve nutritional status and to reduce the incidence of postoperative complications [7]. Nutritional management thus plays an important role in maintaining nutritional status and quality of life during the course of therapeutic measures in patients with advanced and recurrent esophageal carcinoma associated debilitated disorders.…”

“…ASPEN [ 13 ] suggested that ideal enteral nutrition should begin within 24 to 48 h after surgery. Actually, intestine had recovered its absorption function and EMG activity within 4 to 8 h after surgery [ 14 ]. The gastrointestinal tract can not only absorb nutrients, but also plays an important role in immunity because it is a central organ after surgical stress [ 15 ] and it is also the motor of the MODS.…”
