Is Platelet-Derived Growth Factor-BB Expression Proportional to Fibrosis in the Hypertrophied Lumber Ligamentum Flavum?

Abstract: A higher PDGF-BB expression existed in the hypertrophied LF of patients with LSS and could be a risk factor of the fibrosis.

“…TGF-β has been documented to play a significant part for the hypertrophy of LF [18]. Zhang and coworkers reported that the increased expression of platelet-derived growth factor-BB was observed in the hypertrophic lumbar LF [19]. Furthermore, connective tissue growth factor expression was upregulated and correlated with the LF thickness [20].…”

“…6 Removal of the thickened ligamentum fl avum is a main target in the surgical treatment of LSCS. 10 Some authors have evaluated the thickness of the ligamentum fl avum using MRI or computerized tomography and indicated that the ligamentum fl avum is signifi cantly thicker in LSCS. 8-10 , 16-18 Some authors have argued that the ligamentum fl avum thickening is due to tissue hypertrophy, but others have attributed it to the buckling of the ligamentum fl avum.…”

“…In recent years, an increased expression of TGF-β1 has been demonstrated in hypertrophied LF 7 8. Zhang et al 9 reported high platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) expression in pathological lumbar LF. Previous studies have shown fibrosis-like chondroid metaplasia of ligament fibroblasts and calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition in the hypertrophied LF of patients with LSCS 6 10.…”
