Is Perceived Exertion an Useful Indicator of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Response to Metabolic Conditioning of Functional-Fitness Session? A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess if self-regulation of intensity based on rating of perceived exertion (RPE) is a reliable method to control the intensity of metabolic conditioning of functional-fitness session. In addition, the relationship between RPE and changes in heart rate and lactate responses was also analyzed. Eight male participants (age 28.1 ± 5.4 years; body mass 77.2 ± 4.4kg; VO2max: 52.6 ± 4.6 mL·(kg·min)−1) completed three r… Show more

“…The results indicated that during exercise session, individuals were able to maintain the target (80 -90% of peak HR). Interestingly, although high HR levels were experienced, participants reported only a moderate perceived exertion, despite perceived exertion to be an useful indicator of the cardiovascular response during FT session 47 . These findings are in accordance to previous study 48 that support the notion that the relative contribution of motor drive and physiological afferent feedback (i.e.…”

“…The intensity of the exercise sessions can be monitored by the subjective perception of exertion and its correlation with lactate and the number of repetitions performed, providing a practical and economical tool for the prescription and monitoring of training (Alsamir Tibana et al, 2019). In this study, the practitioners presented subjective perception of effort values of 7 ± 1.79 for women and 8.5 ± 1.21 for men, which, despite being high to very high values, were not correlated with angular changes during the WOD.…”

“…Immediately after completing the protocol, all the subjects provided subjective perceived exertion responses, using the Borg CR10 scale, which is a useful tool for prescribing and controlling training intensity during sessions of an extreme conditioning program, due to its high correlation with lactate and the number of repetitions completed (Alsamir Tibana et al, 2019;Foster et al, 2001;Morishita et al, 2018).…”

“…Este tipo de treinamento utiliza exercícios do Levantamento de Peso Olímpico (LPO) como snatch e clean, exercícios básicos como os agachamentos, levantamento terra e supino, exercícios aeróbios como corrida, remo, bicicleta e exercícios ginásticos como paradas de mão e uso de acessórios como paralelas, argolas e barra. (Tibana;Prestes, 2015;Lichtenstein et al, 2016).…”
