Is natural (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid as effective as synthetic folic acid in increasing serum and red blood cell folate concentrations during pregnancy? A proof-of-concept pilot study

Abstract: Background: North American health authorities recommend 0.4 mg/day folic acid before conception and throughout pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate that must be reduced by dihydrofolate reductase and then further metabolized. Recent evidence suggests that the maximal capacity for this process is limited and unmetabolized folic acid has been detected in circulation. The biological effects of unmetabolized folic acid are unknown. A natural form of folate, … Show more

“…Full study details are published elsewhere, 26 but in brief, n = 60 pregnant women were enrolled to a proof-of-concept pilot study of supplementation with folic acid or (6 S )-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid for 16 weeks of pregnancy, starting at 8–21 weeks gestation. The study was randomized and double-blinded.…”

“…17,19,25 We enrolled n = 60 healthy pregnant women in a clinical trial in Vancouver, Canada, using a series of paid Facebook campaigns and traditional offline methods. 26 The aims of this study were twofold: (1) to evaluate and compare results of recruitment via social media and offline methods (including demographic characteristics, rate of recruitment and direct costs); and (2) to explore optimization of intermittent online campaigns (including dollars spent, campaign duration, photo used and settings in Facebook ad design (e.g. attribution setting)).…”

“…W 2020 r. zaprojektowano badanie randomizowane, sprawdzające, czy kwas (6S)-5-metylotetrahydrofoliowy jest tak samo skuteczny jak kwas foliowy w zwiększaniu stężenia kwasu foliowego we krwi podczas ciąży. Wyniki te będą miały istotne znaczenie dla zaleceń położniczych dotyczących suplementacji folianów u kobiet ciężarnych [8,41].…”
