Is laparoscopic cholecystectomy more challenging in male patients?

Abstract: Based on our analysis, LC had a significantly longer duration of surgery in the male cohort. The rate of conversion to open surgery was also significantly higher in male cohort. Thus, LC could be more challenging in male patients.

“…Over the last decades many authors have sort to characterize predictive factors for a challenging or complicated laparoscopic cholecystectomy. 2,[15][16][17][18][19] This study aimed at analyzing the gender associated surgical challenge in patients undergoing LC for AC. Surgical challenge was defined by the duration of surgery in minutes and the rate of conversion.…”

“…1 Over the last decades this procedure has grown to be the standard procedure for the management of benign gallbladder disease. [2][3][4] The surgical challenges in LC, especially converting from laparoscopic to open surgery has been a matter of concern. [5][6][7][8][9] The gender-associated risk of complication in laparoscopic cholecystectomy has not been clearly defined.…”

“…Laparoscopic cholecystectomy represents one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide and has been shown to be the gold standard for the management of fit patients with AC (1,(23)(24)(25)(26)(27). On the other hand, elderly and critically ill patients undergoing cholecystectomy for AC might be at high risk for conversion from laparoscopic to open surgery, complications (especially bile duct injury in over 40%), or even death (over 4%) (28,29).…”

“…Clinical symptoms such as biliary colics and stone-related complications such as cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis, cholangitis, and pancreatitis are well-known clinical entities [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. These conditions often necessitate the surgical removal of the gallbladder, usually using a laparoscopic technique [5,10]. Besides gastrointestinal reflux disease, gallbladder stone-related conditions represent the second most expensive gastrointestinal pathology.…”
