Analyzing the effects of urban development on dynamic and spatial patterns of land use is vital to establish more efficient land management policies. However, in Malaysia, such effects are usually explained without quantitative metrics. This research quantified the future impact of urban expansion on the dynamic of land use by developing the area-independent dynamic metric. The metric was calculated based on summarizing the cross tabulation matrices of change in an urbanizing area at west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Another two land use measures involving vulnerability to gain and Appl. Spatial Analysis vulnerability to loss were used to evaluate tendency of land classes to transition. The effects of urban development on spatial patterns of land use were quantified using two landscape metrics involving the Edge Density (ED) and Area-Weighted Mean Patch Fractal Dimension (AWMPFD). Analyses were carried out on a set of spatial land use data including observed 1997, 2002, and 2008, as well as a simulated near future land change for the year 2020 under a spatio-temporal land use model. Results showed that urban development practices would influence the dynamic of land transition in the near future. Urban growth would experience a fast-growing dynamic and high vulnerability to gain than loss while the dynamic and vulnerability of forest/wetland covers would decrease in terms of loss. Moreover, agriculture practices tend to be hindered by further urban development in the coming years. Another important finding was that urban development process would influence the spatial patterns of land use in the near future.

-In recent decades man's role in soil formation has become a matter of great concern among soil scientists. Man is now considered a soil-forming factor and anthrosolization is recognised as a soil-forming process that consists of a collection of geomorphic and pedological processes resulting from human activities. These human activities include deep working, intensive fertilization, the addition of extraneous materials, irrigation with sediment-rich waters and wet cultivation. In this paper we review the influence of man as a soil forming factor stressing also some peculiar aspects linked to their classification.

Loss of pedodiversity is a worsening land degradation issue worldwide. Knowledge of rare and endangered soils is critical for the protection of pedodiversity. However, such knowledge remains limited, especially for mountain regions with intensive human disturbance. In this paper, rare and endangered soils were identified using the Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD), and their spatial distributions were determined for Taihang Mountain region, North China. Furthermore, the effects of natural (elevation, precipitation, temperature, slope gradient, soil parent, and vegetation) and human (farming and population density) factors on rare and endangered soils were analyzed. The results showed that based on the second‐level HWSD classification, a total of 94 soil types were identified in Taihang Mountain region, 36 of which were rare and 7 endangered soils. It implied that there was the need to protect soil resources in this region. Cluster analysis showed that Dystric Podzoluvisols and Mollic Gleysols were the most endangered soils in terms of both area and distribution, suggesting that these soil types needed to be protected. Most of the rare and endangered soils were distributed in the northern of Taihang Mountain, indicating that the northern part needed more attention. Correlation analysis showed that the effect of human factors on rare and endangered soils was more important than that of natural factors, confirming that human activities were largely responsible for the occurrence of rare and endangered soils. Such results provided not only further understanding of pedodiversity but also useful information for protection of soil resources and control of land degradation.
