There is growing recognition in mental health for the perspective of individuals with lived experience of mental health problems and mental health service use. As peer workers, these individuals can use their specific experience to benefit and support peers and professional caregivers, and to participate at all levels of mental health‐care systems. The aim of the present study was to develop a conceptual framework representing the driving forces of peer workers to fullfil their position in mental health‐care systems. A qualitative interview approach was employed using principles of grounded theory. Over a period of 5 months in 2014–2015, semistructured interviews were conducted with 14 peer workers in residential and community mental health‐care systems. The emerged conceptual framework reveals that peer workers strive towards constructing a positive identity. This process is powered by driving forces reflecting a desire for normalization and an urge for self‐preservation. Peer workers realize a meaningful employment by using their lived experience perspective as an asset, liberating themselves out of restrictive role patterns, and by breaking down stigma and taboo. As a precondition to engage in these normalization processes, peer workers perceive they need to secure their self‐preservation by balancing the emergence of adverse emotional fluctuations. The conceptual framework can inform the development of work contexts in which peer workers have an authentic and meaningful contribution, while being offered sufficient support and learning opportunities to manage their well‐being.

Background : Patients suffering from chronic pain frequently ask pharmacists for advice. Aims : This study was prompted by inadequacies in the available body of literature reporting on pharmacists’ experiences with providing care for patients with chronic pain in the community setting. Methods : A qualitative investigation of Ontario community pharmacists’ experiences was carried out. Participants were interviewed using a semistructured guide. Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis, influenced by grounded theory. Results : This study revealed that pharmacists were knowledgeable and empathetic toward patient concerns. Challenges in their role included financial factors, patient access to multimodal treatment options, potential for harm associated with opioid use, inadequate monitoring, and gaps in training. Conclusions : This study reports community and Family Health Team pharmacists’ experiences caring for patients with chronic pain and perceptions of their professional role, including strengths and limitations, and identifies perceived challenges in the health care system.

Discriminating among grounded theory approaches

To rationalize the selection of a research methodology, one must understand its philosophical origins and unique characteristics. This process can be challenging in the landscape of evolving qualitative methodologies. Grounded theory is a research methodology with a distinct history that has resulted in numerous approaches. Although the approaches have key similarities, they also have differing philosophical assumptions that influence the ways in which their methods are understood and implemented. The purpose of this discussion paper is to compare and contrast three widely used grounded theory approaches with key distinguishing characteristics, enabling a more thoughtful selection of approach. This work contributes to the existing literature through contrasting classic Glaserian grounded theory, Straussian grounded theory, and constructivist grounded theory in a systematic manner with prominent distinguishing characteristics developed from a review of the literature. These characteristics included historical development, philosophical perspective, role of the researcher, data analysis procedures, perspective of the grounded theory, and strengths/critique. Based on this analysis, three considerations are proposed to direct the methodological choice for a study: purpose, philosophy, and pragmatics. Understanding the similarities and differences in the grounded theory approaches can facilitate methodological transparency and determine the best fit for one's study and worldview as a researcher.
