Is it just lactose intolerance?

Abstract: Acquired delayed-onset hypolactasia is a common autosomal recessive condition. Cow's milk allergies, conversely, are less common conditions that may manifest with equivalent symptoms and are able to simulate and/or aggravate lactose intolerance. This study was designed to evaluate the contribution of IgE-mediated cow's milk sensitization to the symptomatology of adult patients with lactose-free diet refractory lactose intolerance. Forty-six adult patients with lactose intolerance and persistent symptoms despi… Show more

“…Milk fat serves an important function as the major energy component in goat milk and it dictates the milk flavor and taste (Bauman & Griinari, ). Milk contains many short‐chain fatty acids (Chilliard et al., ) and so can be absorbed easily into human bodies (Pisanu et al., ) and can help overcome lactose intolerance (Olivier et al., ). The short‐chain fatty acids account for only 30% of cattle milk.…”

“…The decrease in the activity of lactase as a result of the damaging effect of the food allergen on the mucosa of the small intestine has been described in the literature, but the data concerning the frequency of its occurrence are insufficient. 7,9,12,14 Among our patients with diagnosed IgE-dependent allergy to the proteins of cow's milk, lactose intolerance occurred in 12.5%. This frequency was lower than the populational frequency.…”

“…or Swiss cheeses. Another type of food intolerance is due to the deficiency of a specific enzyme in the affected individual, for example, migraines induced by the ingestion of tyramine-rich foods in individuals with a metabolic defect for processing this amino acid [39] or individuals with lactase deficiency [40].…”
