Is Hearing Impairment Associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis? A Review

Abstract: Background:Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, inflammatory disease that affects 1% of the population. The auditory system may be involved during the course of disease; however the association of RA and hearing impairment has not been clearly defined. Objective: The objective of this review is to evaluate published clinical reports related to hearing impairment in patients with RA. Furthermore, we discuss possible pathologies and associated factors as well as new treatment modalities. Method:A thorough l… Show more

“…In addition to articular and extra-articular manifestations, various comorbidities can complicate the course of disease. [ 3 ] Patients with RA are at increased risk of diabetes, [ 4 ] vasculitis, [ 5 ] lung diseases [ 6 ] and hearing loss, [ 7 ] probably due to autoimmunity, compared with the general population. Other common comorbidities among patients with RA are cardiovascular events, different types of cancers, depression, and so on.…”

“…It has been reported that SNHL is more common in RA patients (24-60%) and it is caused by RA influencing the inner ear. [4] RA may cause auditory neuropathy with mononeuritis multiplex type vasculitis. Autoimmunity may cause destruction of cochlear hair cells or the accumulation of immune deposits in the inner ear.…”

“…In 2015, we performed a literature review respecting hearing impairment in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) which is published in early 2016 ( Emamifar et al., 2016a , Emamifar et al., 2016b , Emamifar et al., 2016c ). In this supplementary review, we presented data using the published literature since then.…”

“…Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has been reported as the most common hearing impairment in RA with a prevalence of approximately 12–80% following by conductive hearing loss (CHL) and mixed hearing loss (MHL) ( Emamifar et al., 2016a , Lobo et al., 2016 , Ahmadzadeh et al., 2017 ). The pathogenesis of hearing impairment in RA is not clearly understood, though it may be related to arthritis of incudostapedial and incudomalleolar joints [ Fig.…”
