Is Headache Related to Asthma, Hay Fever, and Chronic Bronchitis? The Head‐HUNT Study

Abstract: This large questionnaire-based study confirms that migraine and other headaches are associated with respiratory and allergic disorders. The magnitude of the association between headache and asthma, hay fever, and chronic bronchitis tended to be in the same order. Headache frequency seems to have a greater impact on the association with respiratory or allergic conditions than headache diagnoses. Whether it is a causal relationship is uncertain, but the results underline the importance of considering comorbid di… Show more

“…The relationship of headache and migraine with migraine was investigated in many studies. According to the results of the "Head Hunt" study, the frequency of asthma and chronic bronchitis was 1.5-times higher in patients with migraine and non-migraine headaches than in the normal population and the presence of asthma and bronchitis was found to be associated with the frequency of headache [7]. The fact that approximately 60% of our patients had headache indicates the high frequency of headache in asthma patients.…”

“…Visual loss 12 (7) was found to be significantly high in patients with a familial history of allergic symptoms (54%) (p=0.002). A statistically significant relationship was detected between the complaint of headache and the presence of the familial histories of asthma, migraine, and allergic symptoms [42% (p=0.01), 80.6% (p=0.015), and 71.4% (p=0.038), respectively].…”

“…42 This contrasts with findings from a Norwegian study, which showed an association of asthma, rhinitis and chronic bronchitis with migrainous and non-migrainous headaches. 21 Education is important to encourage patients to keep analgesic doses as low as possible. This will help to prevent the development of medication overuse headaches, especially those resulting from migraine medication overuse.…”

“…The presence of rhinitis, or other significant respiratory or systemic disease, was recorded; this is because an association of headaches with asthma, rhinitis or chronic bronchitis has been described. 21 The presence of atopy, especially if the patient had positive skin tests, was also recorded.…”

“…Recent demographical studies showed that migraine was more common to women than to men and its burden has been underestimated. Many illnesses, physical or psychiatric, have been reported to be co-morbid with migraine (Aamodt et al 2007;Bigal et al 2010;Buse et al 2010;Hagen et al 2002;Kurth et al 2008;Le et al 2011); these disorders occur at a greater coincidental rate among migraine patients than among the general population. Understanding the association of migraine with other health conditions can help the clinicians providing better care and investigate the pathogenesis of these disorders.…”
