Is Handedness at Five Associated with Prenatal Factors?

Abstract: The goal of the study was to investigate some of the factors suspected to be related to children’s handedness: presentation during the last weeks of gestation and at birth (cephalic or breech), side of presentation (right or left), number of weeks of gestation, season of birth, parents’ handedness and sex. We analyzed the relationships between these factors and the child’s handedness at five years. Children (n = 1897) from the EDEN cohort participated in the study, among which 1129 were tested for handedness a… Show more

“…Parental LH was strongly predictive of LH in their twin offspring, which was not the case for MH. These results also are consistent with earlier reports (Fagard et al, 2021; Johnston et al, 2013; Zhu et al, 2009). Consistent with the meta-analysis of handedness in twins, we observed comparable prevalence of MH in twins, that is, 1.33% versus 2.67% in singletons (Pfeifer et al, 2022).…”

“…Nevertheless, it has been reported that additive genetic effects only accounts for a quarter of the variance in handedness (Medland et al, 2009), therefore this left-hander-selection-choice is somewhat arbitrary. However, recent studies reported that paternal non-right-handedness was significantly related to left-hand preference in children (van Heerwaarde et al, 2020;Fagard et al, 2021). In our study, all the selected left-handers appeared to have a left-handed father, comforting our criteria choice.…”

“…Although several genes have been associated with it (McManus et al 2013), human handedness has been shown to be influenced by a number of environmental and cultural factors (e.g. Fagard and Dahmen 2004;Ocklenburg et al 2010;Fagard et al 2021), including parental influence (Laland 2008). Studies have proposed hypotheses on the role of human domestication in shaping dogs' cognition, behaviour, and sociability (Range et al 2019;Lazzaroni et al 2020).…”
