The associations between the consumption of fast foods and asthma or allergic diseases have not been clarified. The aim of this study was to determine whether fast foods consumption is associated with asthma or allergic diseases. Databases were searched up to February 2018. Studies investigating the associations between fast foods consumption and asthma or allergic diseases were considered eligible. Included studies were assessed for quality using standardized critical appraisal checklists. The quality scores were 5.33 AE 1.16 in case-control studies and 5.69 AE 1.55 in cross-sectional studies. Adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled. Sixteen studies (13 cross-sectional and 3 case-control studies) were included. The consumption of fast foods was significantly related to current asthma (aOR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.17-2.13 for casecontrol study and aOR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.10-2.26 for cross-sectional studies), severe asthma (aOR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.23-1.46), asthma ever (aOR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.06-1.75), current wheeze (aOR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.16-1.27), wheeze ever (aOR: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.07-2.52), physician-diagnosed allergic rhinitis (odds ratio: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.05-1.95), severe eczema (aOR: 1.51; 95% CI: 1.16-1.96) and severe rhino-conjunctivitis (aOR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.18-2.00). The consumption of hamburgers was associated with current asthma (aOR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.13-2.25), severe asthma (aOR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.23-1.46), asthma ever (aOR: 1.47; 95% CI: 1.13-1.92), severe eczema (aOR: 1.51; 95% CI: 1.16-1.96), severe rhino-conjunctivitis (aOR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.18-2.00) and rhino-conjunctivitis (aOR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.15-1.27). The consumption of fast foods, especially hamburgers, ≥3 times/week, was more likely to be associated with severe asthma and current wheeze compared with the consumption of 1-2 times/week (both P < 0.001). In conclusion, the consumption of fast foods, particularly hamburgers, correlates to asthma in a dose-response pattern, which needs to be further validated in longitudinal and interventional studies.

Rationale: A potential adverse effect of high folate intake during pregnancy on children's asthma development remains controversial.Objectives: To prospectively investigate folate intake from both food and supplements during pregnancy and asthma at age 7 years when the diagnosis is more reliable than at preschool age.Methods: This study included eligible children born [2002][2003][2004][2005][2006] from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, a populationbased pregnancy cohort, linked to the Norwegian Prescription Database. Current asthma at age 7 was defined by asthma medications dispensed at least twice in the year (1,901 cases; n = 39,846) or by maternal questionnaire report (1,624 cases; n = 28,872). Maternal folate intake was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire validated against plasma folate. We used log-binomial and multinomial regression to calculate adjusted relative risks with 95% confidence intervals.Measurements and Main Results: Risk of asthma was increased in the highest versus lowest quintile of total folate intake with an adjusted relative risk of 1.23 (95% confidence interval, 1.06-1.44) that was similar for maternally reported asthma. Mothers in the highest quintile had a relatively high intake of food folate (median, 308; interquartile range, 241-366 mg/d) and nearly all took at least 400 mg/d of supplemental folic acid (median, 500; interquartile range, 400-600 mg/d). Conclusions:In this large prospective population-based cohort with essentially complete follow-up, pregnant women taking supplemental folic acid at or above the recommended dose, combined with a diet rich in folate, reach a total folate intake level associated with a slightly increased risk of asthma in children.

SummaryThis review forms part of a series of annual updates that summarize the evidence base for atopic eczema (AE), providing a succinct guide for clinicians and patients. It provides a summary of key findings from 15 systematic reviews that were published during 2015, and focuses on the epidemiology and methodology issues of AE. For systematic reviews on the prevention and treatment of AE, see Part 2 of this update. The worldwide prevalence of AE during childhood has been calculated to be 7.89% (95% CI 7.88-7.89), based on studies of 1 430 329 children from 102 countries. Children with AE are four times more likely than controls to have allergic rhinitis and asthma [relative risk (RR) = 4.24, 95% CI 3.75-4.79]. Twin studies show the heritability of AE to be about 75%. AE is more prevalent in patients with vitiligo and alopecia, and is positively associated with a high body mass index in America and Asia but not in Europe. Possible relationships between AE and exercise, maternal folate supplementation, maternal stress and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been assessed, but more high-quality studies are needed for definitive conclusions. The Harmonising Outcomes Measures for Eczema (HOME) Initiative is developing a core set of outcome measures for AE trials. Suitable instruments for measuring quality of life are yet to be agreed, and use of Investigator Global Assessment in trials requires standardization. Transparent reporting of AE trials remains problematic.
