The most common cancer worldwide among women is breast cancer. The initiation, promotion, and progression of this cancer result from both internal and external factors. The International Agency for Research on Cancer stated that 18-20% of cancers are linked to infection, and the list of definite, probable, and possible carcinogenic agents is growing each year. Among them, biological carcinogens play a significant role. In this review, data covering infection-associated breast and lung cancers are discussed and presented as possible involvements as pathogens in cancer. Because carcinogenesis is a multistep process with several contributing factors, we evaluated to what extent infection is significant, and concluded that members of the herpesvirus, polyomavirus, papillomavirus, and retrovirus families definitely associate with breast cancer. Detailed studies of viral mechanisms support this conclusion, but have presented problems with experimental settings. It is apparent that more effort needs to be devoted to assessing the role of these viruses in carcinogenesis, by characterizing additional confounding and synergistic effects of carcinogenic factors. We propose that preventing and treating infections may possibly stop or even eliminate certain types of cancers.

RESUMENEl virus de Epstein-Barr (VEB) es un agente infeccioso que tiene tropismo por células linfoides y ocasionalmente por células epiteliales. La Agencia Internacional para la Investigación sobre Cáncer (IARC, por su sigla en inglés) lo clasificó hace 20 años como carcinógeno de tipo I, porque durante la infección latente expresa diferentes proteínas o micro-ARN con capacidad oncogénica, por lo que las células infectadas tendrían el potencial de desarrollar cáncer. Esto se ha demostrado en algunos tipos de cáncer como linfomas, carcinoma nasofaríngeo y cán-cer gástrico, mientras que la asociación no es completamente clara en los cánceres de mama y pulmón. La presente revisión describe, profundiza y analiza la relación del VEB con dichos tipos de cáncer, así como los métodos diagnósticos empleados para su detección. Finalmente, se plantean preguntas cuyas respuestas podrían contribuir al conocimiento de los mecanismos moleculares involucrados en la relación VEB-cáncer. PALABRAS CLAVE

The prevalence of breast cancer is rising worldwide. The main cause of death from breast cancer is distant metastasis, which occurs within 3 years after diagnosis in 10-15% of patients. The initiation and progression of breast cancer have been related to both external and internal factors, including viral infection. Human cytomegalovirus infection (HCMV) is common in breast cancer and metastases, and high tumor levels of HCMV appear to worsen outcomes. HCMV can increase the malignant behavior of tumor cells by modulating multiple cellular regulatory and signaling pathways and enhance the proliferation, survival, invasion, motility, and adhesion of tumor cells. Although HCMV seems to have an oncomodulatory role in breast cancer, definitive evidence for a causal role is lacking, and further studies are needed. The current review will discuss evidence that links viral infections to breast cancer.
