Is Cortical Theta-Gamma Phase-Amplitude Coupling Memory-Specific?

Abstract: One of the proposed neural mechanisms involved in working memory is coupling between the theta phase and gamma amplitude. For example, evidence from intracranial recordings shows that coupling between hippocampal theta and cortical gamma oscillations increases selectively during working memory tasks. Theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling can also be measured non-invasively through scalp EEG; however, EEG can only assess coupling within cortical areas, and it is not yet clear if this cortical-only coupling is tr… Show more

“…For example, disruptions in amplitude modulation might be associated with attentional deficits or memory impairments. 43 In this study to quantify the interaction happening between two distinct oscillatory frequency band (occurring from any one channel) MI is used. The phase of the complex signal that is, obtained by combining low and high frequency signals, are binned uniformly between −180° and 180° giving rise to N bins.…”

“…The equivalent to the question of bandwidth choice here is the selection of the number of cycles in the wavelets [50]. PAC studies have employed wavelets for both phase and amplitude with 5 cycles [51,52], or 7 cycles [24]. When this number is fixed for all the wavelet frequencies, the time resolution of the transformation increases with frequency, while the frequency resolution decreases [50,53].…”

“…We used 200 surrogates for normalizing both the KL-MI and MVL-MI. In some studies, PAC measures are averaged over epochs or electrodes [40,41,52]. This can combine instances of coupling where the amplitude is increased at different values of the phase, and thus the resulting measure has a somewhat different meaning than a single PAC value computed from a number of epochs, which extracts only the PAC that is coherent between the epochs.…”

“…Brain EEG waveform activity was analyzed to assess if cilia deletion alters basal neuronal activity. Cross-frequency-coupling (CFC) between theta and gamma frequency oscillations was calculated to better understand the cognitive impairments that have been seen in ciliary ablation models, since CFC is known to play a role in synaptic plasticity and consolidating short-term memory into long-term memory [25]–[29]. Our results show that temporal ablation of IFT88 alters sleep patterns, reduces EEG waveform activity, and attenuates theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling (PAC).…”
