Is Cardiopulmonary Fitness Level a Risk Factor in Young Saudi Females?

Abstract: Low physical fitness is one of the all-cause mortality risk factors. This study aims to estimate cardiopulmonary fitness (VO2 max) in young Saudi females and correlate it to anthropometric and hemodynamic parameters. Forty-eight young Saudi females completed an exercise stress test until exhaustion. Basal and maximum pulse rate, arterial blood pressure, VO2max and other anthropometric data were measured. The population was divided into low and high VO2 max groups and a comparison was run using student t-test. … Show more

“…Mean VO 2max and SD values were taken from a local study. 14 The mean VO 2max value of the alternative hypothesis was H 1 = 36. Sudents were grouped as −3.7 α 2 /α 1 α 2 (n=28), SCT (n=5), and without 3.7 α rightward deletion or SCT (n=42).…”

“… 18 Physical fitness assessment represented by VO 2max in young, apparently healthy Saudi females in the eastern province revealed low values compared to international values, and the mechanism behind this remains uncertain. 14 , 19 , 20 A recent attempt to explore such mechanisms studied functional exonic variations of low-VO 2max Saudi females and revealed the association of genes involved in heart rate, body weight, breath tests, proteolysis, and cardiac muscle–fiber development. 21 However, that study did not involve the most common hematologic abnormalities present in the area, ie, SCT and 3.7 α rightward deletion.…”

“…The sample size was calculated using G*power 3.1 statistical power analysis software version 19 based on the calculation of the effect size to give a power of 95%. The effect size 0.39 was calculated using the mean VO 2max value of the null hypothesis (H0: 33.7), the standard deviation (SD: 10.97) (mean VO 2max and SD values were taken from the local study) 20. Meanwhile, the mean VO 2max value of the alternative hypothesis was (H1: 40).…”

“…Eighty-seven Saudi female college students were voluntarily recruited from a female-only campus. The sample size was calculated using G-power software depending on the mean value of the VO 2max of Saudi females obtained from a previous study (VO 2max = 33.6 mL/kg min), 19 effect size = 0.25 and power = 0.85. Volunteers were accepted irrespective of their body mass index (BMI) or degree of physical activity.…”
