Is Baseline Cardiac Autonomic Modulation Related to Performance and Physiological Responses Following a Supramaximal Judo Test?

Abstract: Little research exists concerning Heart Rate (HR) Variability (HRV) following supramaximal efforts focused on upper-body explosive strength-endurance. Since they may be very demanding, it seems of interest to analyse the relationship among performance, lactate and HR dynamics (i.e. HR, HRV and complexity) following them; as well as to know how baseline cardiac autonomic modulation mediates these relationships. The present study aimed to analyse associations between baseline and post-exercise HR dynamics follow… Show more

“…In fact, our group has already shown a big parasympathetic depression in HR dynamics during recovery from a supra maximal exercise with a great strength demand on upperbody muscles (i.e., a specific judo test). 2,3 Consequently, the present investigation contributes further to previous studies examining cardiac autonomic regulation after endurance-type supra maximal exercises (i.e., Wingate test, Repeated Sprint protocols) and extends our knowledge to complex efforts that integrate both specific endurance and strength requirements, now fousing in gender differences. “…more repetitions in a supra maximal test). 2,3 However, none of these studies has focused in gender differences regarding HR dynamics and autonomic recovery following judo supra maximal efforts. Even more, little research has been conducted with regard to gender differences in judo performance in an integrative test, with high demands on specific explosive-strength endurance and technical stability under fatigue.…”

“…The previously mentioned observations support that individuals with higher vagal activity may have a better capacity to cope with increased training intensity and load for leading greater training adaptation, like that proposed in our previous study (Vesterinen et al., ). Greater adaptations of individuals with higher resting vagal activity may also be related to a greater adaptation capacity and an improved post‐exercise metabolic recovery (Blasco‐Lafarga et al., ). Furthermore, low‐intensity training may not disturb sufficiently the homeostasis of individuals with higher HRV and thus does not lead to desirable training adaptation.…”
