IS Application Capabilities and Relational Value in Interfirm Partnerships

Abstract: T his study examines how capabilities of information systems (IS) applications deployed in the context of interfirm relationships contribute to business performance. We propose that these capabilities augment the relational value that a firm derives from its business partners-channel partners and customer enterprises-in the context of the distribution channel. Two cospecialized relational assets are considered as key to realization of relational value-knowledge sharing and process coupling. Hypotheses linking … Show more

“…In the context of this study, the pursuit of different open innovation strategies may require support from corresponding IT strategies. Appropriate IT strategies will allocate required resources to support the implementation of organizational strategies and hence enhance their performance (Tallon and are studied to reflect organizational IT strategy (Rai and Tang 2010;Saraf et al 2007), while the breadth and depth of openness is derived to reflect the features of open innovation strategy M a n u s c r i p t 5 (Laursen and Salter 2006). We theorize that a better organizational innovation performance is achieved when a firm's IT strategy aligns with its open innovation strategy.…”

“…Under this condition, the strategic resources of a firm may span its boundaries and embed in interorganizational routines and processes with supply chain partners (Dyer et al 1998). In the context of supply chain, the increasing interorganizational dependence motivates firms to make more relationship-specific investments, share more idiosyncratic information and knowledge, and build stronger inter-firm capabilities to create relational competency, such as IOC, which in turn, can be positioned, leveraged, or improvised to better explore and exploit the business value of IT (Grover et Saraf et al 2007). Accordingly, we suggest that IOC can generate relational value by means of relationship-specific assets, complementary resources and capabilities, and information/knowledgesharing routines (Rosenzweig 2009).…”
