Abstract: A radical proposal to address decisively the problem of mass involuntary unemployment, by way of a government committing itself to stand ready as 'employer of last resort', has recently been put forward by L. Randall Wray and others. To the question of how such large-scale policies would be financed, there has been a suggestion that issuing outside money would suffice. This review employs some simple modelling to show the limits to 'printing money' as a means of financing such an employment policy. The review … Show more

“…And second, many of the arguments are related to expositions of ELR that we would not endorse. Indeed, he has relied to an alarming degree on critics of ELR (Aspromourgos, 2000;Kadmos and O'Hara, 2000;King, 2001;Kriesler and Halevi, 2001;and Mehrling, 2000) for statements of the principles of ELR -reflecting a less than satisfactory approach to what we consider to be appropriate scholarship. In our response, we will limit most of our comments to what we believe to be the main thrust of his critique:…”

“…I have counted nearly a dozen scholarly critiques of neo-chartalism over the years, the more general one being that of Perry Mehrling (2000). Half of these critiques have focused on the idea of the State as the employer of last resort, with papers by Lopez-Gallardo (2000), Aspromourgos (2000), Kadmos and O'Hara (2000), King (2001), Sawyer (2003), and Seccareccia (2004). The other half of the critiques focused on their monetary views, with articles by Parguez and Seccareccia (2000), Gnos and Rochon (2002), Rochon and Vernengo (2003), Van Lear (2002-03), andFebrero (2009).…”
