Irrigation Influencing Farmers’ Perceptions of Temperature and Precipitation: A Comparative Study of Two Regions of the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: Farmers are among the most vulnerable groups that need to adapt to climate change. Correct perception is a prerequisite for farmers to adopt adaptation strategies, which plays a crucial guiding role in the development of adaptation plans and the improvement of the security of livelihoods. This study aimed to compare farmers’ perceptions of temperature and precipitation change with meteorological data in two regions of the Tibetan Plateau, analyzed how irrigation affects farmers’ perceptions. Data were obtained… Show more

“…The irrigation conditions of cultivated land have improved and farmers can have more cultivated land. From 1995 to 2015, the cultivated land irrigation area in the PRB increased from 46.30 km 2 to 89.86 km 2 , with an annual average growth rate of 4.70% [ 82 ]. Reclamation has severely damaged the wetland ecological environment.…”

“…The OSL dating process involved collecting 4 samples from the sedimentation section, which were treated in a dark room and purified of organic matter and carbonates through a combination of hydrogen peroxide and hydrochloric acid. Quartz grains were extracted from the samples through etching with hydrofluoric acid [16].…”

“…In this sense, farmers often overestimate the frequency of unfavourable weather events and might confuse changes in rainfall with changes in the sensitivity of the cropping system (Traore et al 2015). For example, in drought years, farmers with less irrigated cropland could not obtain adequate water resources, leading them to be more likely to perceive a decrease in precipitation (Wang et al 2020).…”
