Irrigation Advisory Services: Farmers preferences and willingness to pay for innovation

Abstract: Irrigation Advisory Services (IAS) are powerful management instruments aiming to achieve the best efficiency in irrigation water use. So far the literature on farmers’ preferences for a specific scheme design of IAS’ characteristics and the related willingness to pay (WTP) is scant. This study provides evidence on farmers’ preference towards six attributes related to the IAS configuration by using a hypothetical choice experiment. Data were collected from an original survey among 108 farmers from Spain, The Ne… Show more

“…Farmer's age, on the other hand, had interestingly a significant positive relationship with high risk aversion of farmer's behavior. The result is similar to that of the works of Altobelli et al (2021), Dilshad et al (2019), Iqbal et al (2016 and Ullah et al (2015) and in contrast with the works of Dadzie and Acquah (2012) and Saqib et al (2016). The positive and significant coefficients of age show that aged farmers are more risk-averse than young farmers and thus when the age increases, farmers become more risk-averse.…”

“…Along with it, the behavioral and socio-economic determinants of farmers for the adoption of these efficient irrigation technologies are also evolving. The success of these technologies can be supported by the integration of stakeholders' needs in the design of IASs [10,11].…”

“…Irrigation advisory services (IASs) (i.e., achieving efficiency in irrigation water use) represent a potential response to this emerging need [7,8]. IASs can optimize water management in agriculture thanks to tools and techniques ranging from traditional irrigation scheduling that advises farmers on when and how to irrigate, to Earth-observation (EO), satellite-based technologies, the internet of things (IoT) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).…”

“…BM concepts have been previously applied to other irrigation technologies such as smart irrigation networks [17], pivot irrigation systems [18], or solar pumps [19,20]. As opposite, to the best of our knowledge, there is a lack of BM application to IASs, as the literature focused mainly on quantifying the benefits associated with the adoption of the service [9,21] and on the investigation of potential users' preferences and willingness to pay [8].…”
