Irreversible proliferation of magnetic moments at cleaved surfaces of the topological Kondo insulator SmB6

Abstract: The compound SmB6 is the best established realization of a topological Kondo insulator, in which a topological insulator state is obtained through Kondo coherence. Recent studies have found evidence that the surface of SmB6 hosts ferromagnetic domains, creating an intrinsic platform for unidirectional ballistic transport at the domain boundaries. Here, surface-sensitive X-ray absorption (XAS) and bulk-sensitive resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra are measured at the Sm N4,5-edge, and used to eva… Show more

“…2j Ce30 ISm map, due to the small dynamic range of the color scale. We note that the gradients in the E4f maps do not appear to be associated with aging, as they align with the diagonal of the image rather than with the left-to-right time-axis of the measurement, and the sign of the timeaxis gradient in Eu05 is opposite to expectations based on the oxidative trend of surface aging [31][32] .…”

“…In addition, Fuhrman et al report that the Sm 3+ magnetic dipole moment antialigns with an applied magnetic field below T = 75 K and suggest that Sm 3+ couples antiferromagnetically to large-moment paramagnetic impurities known to be present in the samples. Sm N-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy has also been performed on flux-grown SmB 6 [159]. He et al show that the Sm 3+ contribution on a cleaved surface increases irreversibly with time as it ages in an ultra-high-vacuum chamber.…”
