Iron phosphide nanoparticles as an efficient electrocatalyst for the OER in alkaline solution

Abstract: Ultrasmall FeP nanoparticles have been reported as an efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalyst in alkaline medium with low onset potential for oxygen evolution and require low overpotential to reach 10 mA cm−2 exchange current density.

“…Thus, a best‐performed OER electrode with an overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH is produced in this study. It is worth pointing out that this value is comparable to those for some reported OER electrocatalysts such as Fe–Ni hydroxide (320 mV), FeP nanoparticles (320 mV), Ni–Co nanowires (302 mV), Ni–P nanoplates (300 mV), amorphous CoSe film (292 mV), CoP/Ti mesh (310 mV) and NiS film (320 mV) under similar experimental conditions (1 M NaOH or 1 M KOH).…”

“…As previously mentioned, foam‐based metal phosphide catalysts, in which the foams serve as both metal source and growth substrate, have also been intensively investigated due to the ultra‐high HER and good OER,,, activity of metal phosphides along with the suitable in situ growth conditions provided by the metal foams. Shalom and co‐workers reported the synthesis of 3 D hierarchical highly ordered Ni 5 P 4 nanosheet films directly on a Ni foil and Ni foam by the simple heating Ni foil and Ni foam with red phosphorus under an inert atmosphere .…”

“…In particular, the sample 0.75‐NC−Fe x P exhibited the highest catalytic activity and the lowest overpotential of 193 mV was obtained. This value is much lower than most active phosphide‐based catalysts as reported, including FeP‐rGO@Au (260 mV), NiP/NM (229 mV), Co phosphide/Co phosphate (380 mV), FeP NAs/CC (218 mV), and some other non‐precious metal based catalysts as listed in Table S1 (SI).…”
