Iron Oxide Nanorings and Nanotubes for Magnetic Hyperthermia: The Problem of Intraparticle Interactions

Abstract: Magnetic interactions can play an important role in the heating efficiency of magnetic nanoparticles. Although most of the time interparticle magnetic interactions are a dominant source, in specific cases such as multigranular nanostructures intraparticle interactions are also relevant and their effect is significant. In this work, we have prepared two different multigranular magnetic nanostructures of iron oxide, nanorings (NRs) and nanotubes (NTs), with a similar thickness but different lengths (55 nm for NR… Show more

“…Exposing the aqueous suspension of magnetic nanoparticles to an external RF magnetic field destabilizes the suspension ( Figure 1 ). The energy of the applied RF magnetic field absorbed by the magnetic nanoparticles is transferred in the form of heat into the aqueous solution [ 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 ]. The resulting increased mobility of the magnetic nanoparticles significantly increases the number of collisions between them.…”

“…In addition, many aspects of medical devices and instruments are regulated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ( www.iso.org ). To reach the final stage of real medical use, a new drug must go through several stages [ 69 , 174 , 175 ]. The first stage includes fundamental research, culminating in a detailed development of the scientific foundations of all elements of the new method.…”

“…In this non-invasive treatment, by applying an AMF and oscillating the magnetic moment of these forefront nanoparticles, the magnetic energy converts to heating energy. The temperature of tumor area is locally raised to destroy the cancerous cells and preventing the collateral damage to healthy cells 35 , 36 . The maintenance of colloidal stability, biocompatibility, and assessment of possible cytotoxicity of MNPs in physiological conditions play a critical role in determining their suitability for in vivo applications.…”
