Iron Kα Emission from X-Ray Reflection: Predictions for Gamma-Ray Burst Models

Abstract: Recent observations of several g-ray burst (GRB) afterglows have shown evidence for a large amount of X-ray line-emitting material, possibly arising from ionized iron. A significant detection of an X-ray spectral feature, such as that found in the Chandra observation of GRB 991216, may provide important constraints on the immediate environment of the burst and hence on progenitor models. “…Claims of low-to moderatesignificance emission lines have been made on the basis of data from several missions: Fe lines have been detected in afterglow data from ASCA (Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics; Yoshida et al 1999), BeppoSAX ( Piro et al 1999;Antonelli et al 2000), and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory (Piro et al 2000); and lines from highly ionized light, multiple-elements such as Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Ca have been detected in afterglow data from XMM-Newton (Reeves et al 2002;Watson et al 2003) and Chandra (Butler et al 2003).
