“…Data for thirty (fifteen wild/wild controls, fourteen C282Y/ wild heterozygote) men recruited to take part in an investigation of the effect of HFE genotype on iron absorption (Roe et al 2005) were used to determine the association between serum prohepcidin concentration and iron absorption in healthy men. Meals (high iron bioavailability and fortified cereal products) were labelled extrinsically with stable isotopes of non-haem iron, and absorption was measured from the isotopic enrichment of red blood cells 14 d post-administration using the haemoglobin incorporation technique (Roe et al 2005).…”

“…Fourteen days after the labeled meal was consumed, a blood sample was taken and iron absorption from the test meal was determined by measuring the enrichment of Fe-57 and Fe-58 in red blood cells following the method by Roe et al [13]. Absorption was calculated from the enrichment of isotopes in the blood, the total iron concentration in whole blood and an estimate of blood volume [14].…”

“…More recently, iron absorption from fortified cereals and a high iron bioavailability meal was measured in C282Y heterozygotes and found to be similar to that of wildtype controls [20]. Carriers also exhibit no difference in the efficiency of haem iron absorption [13].…”
