IRIS Mg ii Observations and Non-LTE Modeling of Off-limb Spicules in a Solar Polar Coronal Hole

Abstract: We investigated the off-limb spicules observed in the Mg II h and k lines by IRIS in a solar polar coronal hole. We analyzed the large dataset of obtained spectra to extract quantitative information about the line intensities, shifts, and widths. The observed Mg II line profiles are broad and doublepeaked at lower altitudes, broad but flat-topped at middle altitudes, and narrow and single-peaked with the largest Doppler shifts at higher altitudes. We use 1D non-LTE vertical slab models (i.e. models which consi… Show more

“…Recently Tei et al (2018) applied the cloud model technique with constant source functions to the Mg II lines which present complex profiles because of their central reversal. Considering multi clouds, Mg II complex profiles of off-limb spicules were successfully fitted (Tei et al 2020).…”

“…Prominence modelling was reviewed by, for example, Gibson (2018) and Gunár (2014). An example of a recent study employing radiative transfer modelling in spicules is available in, for example, Tei et al (2020), and an example of filament modelling is available in Schwartz et al (2019). Information regarding the modelling of Lyman-α in CME cores is available in Heinzel et al (2016), and information regarding the modelling of Lyman-α in the solar wind is available in Dolei et al (2019).…”

“…Although, in many circumstances Mg lines are single peak profiles, for instance, sunspot umbrae (Tian et al 2014), solar flares (Kerr et al 2015), and filaments (Harra et al 2014). In addition, outside of the limb, Mg k lines exhibit single-peak profile (Tei et al 2020). Therefore, in present scenario as spectra was taken far away from the limb (see IRIS slit in the left-panel of figure 6 -white dashed line), we believe that Mg lines should be single peaked profiles.…”
