Iridium to provenance ancient silver

Abstract: Trace levels of iridium in ancient silver artefacts can provide information on the sources of silverbearing ores as well as the technologies used to extract silver. A geographically and chronologically disparate legacy dataset, comprised of Near Eastern objects from the Sasanian and Byzantine Empires (1st Millennium AD) and coins circulating around the Mediterranean in the mid-1st Millennium BC, shows that Ag-Au-Ir log-ratio plots can help identify silver derived from the same mining areas, as well as broadly … Show more

“…4). It is also very different to that of Athenian coins which were produced from silver mined at Laurion in Attica, which generally have low Pb crustal ages (see Wood et al 2017, 2019. Figure 4 shows that the Pb crustal ages of Laurion ores lie between -30 and +55 Ma and a range of ages of Athenian coins from the Asyut hoard (Gale et al 1980).…”

“…The sample was described as a Ag-Pb cake, reflecting the high levels of lead in this semi-refined ingot. LIA values were used to calculate the Pb crustal age in millions of years (Ma) from the twostage evolution model (see Wood et al 2017Wood et al , 2019Desaulty et al 2011). EPMA was conducted as it permitted measurement of elements not detected by pXRF, e.g.…”
