IR dynamics from UV divergences: UV/IR mixing, NCFT, and the hierarchy problem

Abstract: The persistence of the hierarchy problem points to a violation of effective field theory expectations. A compelling possibility is that this results from a physical breakdown of EFT, which may arise from correlations between ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) physics. To this end, we study noncommutative field theory (NCFT) as a toy model of UV/IR mixing which generates an emergent infrared scale from ultraviolet dynamics. We explore the range of such theories where ultraviolet divergences are transmogrified i… Show more

“…Although this scenario could compromise the renormalizability of the theory, it also brings out several opportunities. The mixing could be for example used to generate small scales from the UV dynamics as pointed out in [9]. It also served as a motivation to find new well-behaved NC field theories.…”

“…A covariant definition of the "energy density" bound explored in this work, might be derived similar to a covariant entropy bound [11]. Whether there is a relationship between gravitational UV/IR mixing and UV/IR mixing in noncommutative field theories can be determined [38][39][40][41][42], along with the bearing this would have on lepton magnetic moment measurements.…”

“…But, e.g., in noncommutative field theories and string theory, short distance physics becomes related to long distance Physics, which is known as UV/IR mixing. The consequence of UV/IR mixing [14] is, e.g., that UV divergences of real φ 4 theory defined on commutative space are transformed into infrared poles in the same theory defined on noncommutative space. There are other more examples explained nicely in [14].…”
