IR analysis of borate glasses containing three alkali oxides

Abstract: FTIR investigations on borate glasses containing three alkali oxides, , 10, 12, 14, and 16 mol%) are reported. The present glasses contain mainly BO 3 and BO 4 structural units. The presence of fingerprints of both BiO 3 and BiO 6 structural units in bismuth alkali borate glasses was confirmed. The presence of varied types like di, tetra, penta, and ortho borate groups are confirmed in the glass matrix. Glasses with low PbO content contained more BO 3 units than BO 4 units.

“…May be more energy is needed to form the glass. (2) The broad band between 800 and 1200 cm-1 and this is due to the B-O bond stretching of the tetrahedral BO 4 units (in triborate, tetraborate and pentaborate groups) [29][30][31][32][33].…”

“…Glasses of different compositions in the system [70% H 3 BO 3 + x%BaSO 4 (byrite) +(30-x) %MgCa(CO 3 ) 2 (dolomite)] where x = 0,5, 10 and 15 are fabricated by the melt quenching technique. The samples are melted in a porcelain crucible at 1473 Kfor 1.5 h in an electric muffle furnace (LENTON).…”

“…The processing window T pw was also seen to reduce as well (see Table 1). According to Hruby's method [31], the greater the temperature difference between Crystallisation temperature (T onc ) and T g , the more stable the glass is and the easier it is to avoid partial crystallisation during its working operation, such as fibre drawing [39]. Thus, the thermal stability of the glasses in this study was reduced with substitution of Fe 2 O 3 for…”

“…Borate glasses containing lead oxide have several applications including radiation shields, optical, and thermal properties [3], [4]. Similarly bismuth containing oxide glasses have advantages such as host materials for lasers, long IR cut-off, glass ceramics, memory, and switching devices [5], [6], [7]. Therefore, this work has been performed and aims to investigate an empirical relation correlate the glass structure directly to its optical properties especially the refractive index.…”
