The mobility-enabling protocol Mobile IP supports location registration but not paging. However, current cellular networks use registration as well as paging procedures to minimize signaling cost. Accordingly, an extension to Mobile IP using distributed individual paging, the so-called DIP-MIP, is proposed. In DIP-MIP, each mobile host derives its own paging area size by optimizing a signaling cost function based on its individual mobility pattern. The cost function itself may use either of two mobility models -fluid flow and random walk -and the performance of DIP-MIP is analyzed for both. The impact of various parameters on the DIP-MIP signaling cost is studied as well. The performance of DIP-MIP is shown to be superior to that of Mobile IP (MIP) in reducing signaling load, managing mobility and supporting a large number of mobile users in IP-based cellular networks.

Abstract. For more scalable mobile services, it is important to reduce the signaling cost for location management. In this paper, we propose a cost effective IP paging scheme utilizing explicit multicast (xcast). Xcast is a new kind of multicast scheme for small sized groups which uses unicast with low maintenance overhead. In terms of the paging algorithm, we use a selective paging scheme to minimize the paging cost, by dividing a paging area into several sub-paging areas. For the performance analysis, we develop an analytical model based on the random walk model in the mesh and hexagonal cell configurations. Using this model, we compared the paging cost between IP paging scheme using xcast and that using unicast or multicast. The results indicate that the proposed paging scheme reduces the paging cost by 44-84% compared with traditional paging schemes using multicast.

Abstract-Multi-step paging has been widely proposed to reduce signaling overheads. Similar ideas can be applied to Mobile IP to provide IP paging services. However, current proposed multi-step paging schemes are user-dependent under which the partition of paging areas and the selection of paging sequence are different for each user. The performance of a userdependent paging scheme for individual users may be affected by many factors. This paper introduces a user-independent paging scheme for Mobile IP where the paging criterion is not based on individual user information. The goal of user-independent paging is to provide satisfactory overall performance of the whole system, when personalized optimal performance for each user is hard to obtain. The paging criterion adopted is the mobility rate of each subnet determined by the aggregated movements of all mobile users. In order to implement the proposed scheme, a concept of "semi-idle state" is introduced and the detailed solution for obtaining mobility rate is presented. Analytical results show that when paging one user at a time, the performance of the proposed scheme is comparable to that of the user-dependent paging schemes. When paging multiple users simultaneously, the proposed scheme has remarkable advantages.
