IoT and Robotics: a synergy

Abstract: Abstract-The Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) [9] is a concept first introduced by Dan Kara at ABI Research, which talks about augmenting the existing IoT with active sensorization; thereby, opening the doors to novel business ideas, at the intersection of both IoT and Robotics. This position paper considers the synergy between IoT and robotics: it talks about the technologies in IoT that would benefit the robotics domain. The advent of Cloud Robotics and its role in aiding robot functions like sensing, manip… Show more

“…IoT represents a collection of “Things” or embedded devices connected using various wireless technologies such as private and public networks ( Atzori, Iera & Morabito, 2010 ). Based on the application domain, IoT applications are classifiable into six groups, for example, health care ( Zeb et al, 2016 ; Ambarkar & Shekokar, 2020 ), environmental ( Kumari & Sahana, 2019 ; Behera et al, 2020 ; Zhuang et al, 2019 ; Jawad et al, 2017 ), smart city ( Santos, Jimenez & Espinosa, 2019 ; Luo, 2019 ), commercial ( Li & Cheffena, 2019 ; Khanna & Tomar, 2016 ), IoT based robotic ( Roy Chowdhury, 2017 ) and industry ( Zhu et al, 2020 ).…”

“…In this cyber-physical perspective of the IoRT, sensor and data analytics technologies from the IoT are used to give robots a wider situational awareness that leads to better task execution. use cases include intelligent transportation 15 and companion robots. 16 Later uses of the term IoRT in literature adopted alternative perspectives of this term: for example, one that focuses on the robust team communication, [17][18][19] and a 'robot-aided IoT' view where robots are just additional sensors.…”
