The first systematic study on the ionothermal synthesis of silicoaluminophosphates (SAPOs) was performed to study the influence of reaction time, Si/Al or F/Al ratios and changing ionic liquid (cation, anion and alkyl group). The resulting materials were characterised by XRD, liquid ( 1 H) and solid state ( 29 Si) NMR, TPDA, SEM images, Volhard titration, as well as thermogravimetric and nitrogen sorption analyses. 1-Butyl-3methylimidazolium bromide ([C 4 mim]Br) as both solvent and structure-directing agent (SDA) produced the AFI framework. It was found that the resulting Si/Al ratio of SAPO-AFI increases with an increase in initial Si/Al ratio but decreases with F/Al ratio in the reaction mixture. Different ionic liquids giving the same framework type have no effect on the silicon uptake. The formation of Si-islands is favoured at extended reaction times or higher silicon content. The framework type of SAPOs can be changed from AEL to AFI by changing either the alkyl chain from ethyl to butyl, substituting the C2-position of the cation with a methyl moiety, or altering the cation (imidazolium vs. pyridinium). The framework selectivity was altered from AFI to LTA by changing the anion (of [C 4 py]Br to Cl À ), and to CHA by 1-methylimidazole addition. The first successful ionothermal synthesis of the AFI, LTA and CHA framework types of SAPOs is presented, providing a more efficient method than the conventional hydrothermal synthesis.[a] Dr.

Known as green inorganic products and environmentally beneficial, ionic liquids (ILs) are increasingly used in the ionothermal synthesis of zeolites and zeotype materials compared to the hydrothermal method. This safe and successful process offers new opportunities to produce several molecular sieves with different morphologies and structures for promising applications.In this review, we summarize the history of the most successful phases of zeolites and zeotype materials, with different structures such as AEL, AEI, AFI, AST, ATS, CHA, -CLO, ITW, LEV, LTA, MFI, MTN, MTT, SOD, TON, IRR, and STW, from ILs discovery until 2022. The use of the ionothermal method compared to the hydrothermal route is evaluated and reported in this paper, besides synthesis parameters affecting the final product formation, such as IL dosage, cation size and shape, water content, (P, Si, F, IL/Al) ratios, crystallization time and temperature, mineralizing agent, Me/Al ratio, the addition of a secondary template (co-SDA), the use of IL as both SDA and solvent, competition in forming the framework, and the use of eutectic mixture and deep eutectic solvent (DES). Furthermore, we collected the various applications of these materials and highlighted the advantages of the ionothermal process, offering a comprehensive understanding of this topic.

1-Propyl-2,3-dimethyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium ([pmIm] +), 3-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-1,2-dimethyl-1Himidazol-3-ium ([dhmIm] +) and 1-benzyl-2,3-dimethyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium ([bzmIm] +) cations were used as organic templates for crystallizing SAPO-5 with AFI microporous framework. The physicochemical influences of the functional groups of the templates (e.g. polarity/hydrophilicity, molecular dimension and size) on SAPO-5 formation were investigated. The results revealed that the crystallization rate, crystallinity and solid yield could be enhanced by increasing the polarity/hydrophilicity of the templates. In addition, the isomorphous Si substitution, morphology and particle size of the resulted SAPO-5 were also affected by the substituted groups of the imidazolium 2 templates. The thermogravimetry results further supported that the selection of organic template with proper polarity/hydrophilicity could be crucial to obtain SAPO-5 with high porosity (SBET, Smic, Sext and Vtotal) as high polar/hydrophilic template exhibited stronger chemical interaction with the AFI framework during template removal process via calcination process.
