Ionothermal Approach to Homo- and Heteroleptic Alkylation of Tellurido Mercurate Clusters for Assembly in Lamellar Crystal Structures

Mirko Tallu,
Bertram Peters,
Alexander Friedrich
et al.

Abstract: The selective methylation and butylation of chalcogenido metalate clusters by utilizing imidazolium-based ionic liquids turned out to be not only a comparably mild but at the same time also the only known method for postsynthetic alkylation of such species in order to increase their solubility. For additional impact on the crystal structures, selective alkylation with longer alkyl chains was addressed by utilizing the ionic liquid (C 10 C 1 Im)[BF 4 ] (C 10 = decyl group at position 1 and C 1 = methyl group at… Show more

“…3,33–36 The approach also proved suitable for tellurido mercurate clusters and a ternary Mn/Sn/Se cluster. 34,37 The methyl groups reduced the negative charge of the cluster from 8− in [Sn 10 O 4 S 20 ] 8− to 4−, but the methyl groups did not increase the solubility in the desired way. As a matter of fact, the commonly used imidazolium-based ionic liquids, in which the two N atoms are functionalized by one methyl group and another alkyl chain of varying length, tend to selectively transfer the methyl group.…”
