Ionospheric correction and statistical optimization of radio occultation data

Abstract: [1] One of the most significant error sources in radio occultation soundings are residual errors of the ionospheric correction originating from small scale ionospheric turbulence and receiver noise. These errors degrade the quality of retrievals above 35-40 km. We describe a combined algorithm of the ionospheric correction and noise reduction including the following important details: (1) fitting of climatological model, (2) dynamical estimation of signal and noise covariances using radio occultation signals a… Show more

“…-Perform "linearly combined" (LC) ionospheric correction (Vorob'ev and Krasil'nikova, 1994) and "statistically optimised" (OPT) ionospheric correction (Gorbunov, 2002). The latter requires a background bending angle profile, which is currently derived from the MSIS climatology (Hedin, 1991).…”

“…In processing RO observations, neutral atmospheric meteorological variables are retrieved from amplitude and phase measurements (Gorbunov and Lauritsen, 2004;Gorbunov et al, 2005;Gorbunov and Lauritsen, 2006), while the ionospheric contribution is removed by using the double-frequency linear combination at the same ray impact height (Vorob'ev and Krasil'nikova, 1994;Gorbunov, 2002b). The impressive success of the GPS/MET experiment stimulated further development of RO satellites and constellations, including CHAMP and COSMIC experiments.…”

“…Possible mechanisms responsible for the negative bias were discussed by Sokolovskiy et al (2010) and Gorbunov et al (2010). (Gorbunov, 2002a) is referred to as the initialization. In particular, in this study we were using bending angle profiles computed from the MSIS climatology and subjected to two-parameter fitting (Lohmann, 2007).…”
