Ionophoresis in Non-aqueous Solvent Systems

Abstract: Notes 4721 proceeds from the start, there precipitates out of the conductance vessel a white, crystalline solid with a composition corresponding to AbCle-SiCli•9 After the molar ratio (S2CI2/AICI3) of 0.5 is reached, this compound ceases to precipitate and no further change in the solution is apparent. A brief summary of the data corresponding to Fig. 2 is given in Table II.

“…Recently, however, Kirk (7) fractionated successfully certain type-specific antigens using distilled or redistilled water as background medium on a thoroughly washed filter paper curtain. Although Paul and Durrum (10) and McDonald and Williamson (9) have established the feasibility of one-dimensional (paper strip) electrophoretic separations of highly charged particles in low ionic systems, this preliminary work represents an extension of continuous electrochromatography to the fractionation of noncharged molecules or particles in a comparatively nonionic medium. Current work in this laboratory involves the fractionation of nonpolar samples in nonpolar media such as the hydrocarbons or esters.…”

“…As has been true almost from the inception of paper chromatography, major interest still continues in amino acid and polypeptide separation, identification, and determination from the standpoint of method (40,169,170,172,173,177,213,296,369,391,401,403,429,512) and for numerous specific purposes, including analysis of proteins (168,281), resolution of the optical isomers of tyrosine and glutamic acid (432), determination of peptide end groups (235) and terminal amino acids of bovine plasma albumin (186), of ovomucoid (389), and of hypophysial growth hormone (300), clinical studies of amino acid metabolism (313,330), and comparative studies of the blood amino acids of mammals (129), insects (15), and silkworms (158). The specific problems of chromatography of protein split products as it applies to amino acid metabolism were reviewed by Awapara (17), and a more general comparative review of this technique in comparison with other types of fractionation procedures was published by Boulanger and Biserte (45).…”

“…Ionophoretic separation of dye mixtures in non-aqueous solvents has been achieved. 788 Sedimentation Analysis.-Lead has been determined by centrifuging lead sulphate, 789 and the zinc-1 : 10-phenanthroline reaction already mentioned 73 has been used in a sedimentation determination of vanadium.…”
