Ionizing Radiation

Abstract

Ionizing radiation is one of the most intensely studied of all toxic agents. It is applied in many fields, especially in energy generation and medical applications, due to its unique features. This chapter introduces physical features of radiation, types of radiation and radiation exposure, the toxicity of radiation exposure at the molecular, cellular, and organismal level, and health effects of radiation exposure. Background exposure is described. The latest epidemiological studies on radiation exposure and health outcomes are summarized, low‐dose radiation and linear no‐threshold model are discussed, and the radiation protection policies for different populations are illustrated.
