Ionized calcium and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D concentration in serum of patients with sarcoidosis

Abstract: Serum ionized calcium, which constitutes 46-50% of serum calcium, is the only biologically active form of calcium. The serum concentration of ionized calcium (sCa 2+ ) is strictly regulated within a narrow range. For this reason, when evaluating calcium metabolism and interactions between calcium and vitamin D or between calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH), sCa 2+ could be a more reliable index than the serum concentration of calcium (sCa) or albumin-adjusted sCa (adjCa). 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH) 2 … Show more

“…Serum levels of 1,25(OH) 2 D 3 are inversely correlated with Ca 2þ levels [Holick, 1996;Hamada et al, 1998]. Our findings reveal that levels of 1,25(OH) 2 D 3 causing increased DNA, Lowry protein, and PG encompass the range found by Bikle et al [1985] in hypocalcemic serum.…”

“…Hypercalcemia occurs in 10%of the patients with sarcoidosis whereashypercalcinuria occurs more commonly, being present in up to 60% (9). In our previous report, 44% of patients with sarcoidosis had hypercalcemia or hypercalcinuria ( 10). Several cases associated with abnormal renal function in the absence of hypercalcemia, hypercalcinuria, nephrocalcinosis and urolithiasis as in case 2 have been reported.…”
