Ionization electron signal processing in single phase LArTPCs. Part I. Algorithm Description and quantitative evaluation with MicroBooNE simulation

Abstract: We describe the concept and procedure of drifted-charge extraction developed in the MicroBooNE experiment, a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). This technique converts the raw digitized TPC waveform to the number of ionization electrons passing through a wire plane at a given time. A robust recovery of the number of ionization electrons from both induction and collection anode wire planes will augment the 3D reconstruction, and is particularly important for tomographic reconstruction a… Show more

“…The trigger uncertainty is estimated to be in the range (5-10)% depending on the mass of the HNL signal. (3) Dynamically induced charge (DIC) refers to the charge induced on the wires beyond the wire closest to the ionization trail [26,27]. This effect impacts the algorithm that determines the deposited charge, especially on induction planes, as well as the pattern recognition.…”

“…The procedure is similar to that of our previous study [7] but with an updated version of LArSoft [13] and UBOONECODE [24]. The latter software contains important updates including a data-driven detector noise model [6], noise filtering algorithms, and data-driven TPC charge signal deconvolution kernels [25,26]. These improvements aim to reduce the potential discrepancies between data and simulation samples.…”

“…More complicated effects, such as electronic noise, dynamic range, and deconvolution of electronics response, which are specific to a particular choice of readout technology, are not taken into account in our studies. One important effect which is not incorporated into this work is the effect which arises when particles travel parallel to a series of wires in the 2D projective readout [28]. Events with this topology are particularly challenging to reconstruct using 2D projective readout [12].…”
