“…Here the TOF distribution for each fragment is within about 90 ns and, according to SIMION R simulations performed on the spectrometer geometry, corresponds to a maximum kinetic energy of 3-4 eV. Thus a total kinetic energy release of the OC + + S + channel of about 7 eV is found, consistent with references 32,33 . With the FEL pulses arriving 39 ps after the NIR pulses the appearance of the two side peaks at the extremal times for each ionic fragment is a clear indication of the action of the alignment laser (red curve in Fig.…”

“…The action of the NIR alignment laser on OCS was monitored by detecting different ionic fragment channels after ionization above the Sulfur 2p edge with an FEL energy of 194 eV and subsequent Coulomb explosion. The Coulomb explosion occurs because the 2p hole undergoes rapid Auger decay to a doubly ionized state, with a significant branching ratio into two charged fragments 32 . By varying the time delay of the pump and probe pulses, the rotational dynamics of OCS was observed in the temporal structure of the time-of-flight mass spectrum.…”

“…around the S2p ionisation threshold, and detecting (essentially) the total number of electrons liberated [21]. Absolute photon energy values were established using several of the S2p main pre-edge resonance features for calibration [22]. The calibration of the binding energy scale was made using the two narrow lines in the CS þ 2 spectrum with accurately determined energies of 14.4737 and 16.1883 eV, respectively [8].…”

“…It is worth mentioning here that though Auger decay primarily leads to double ionization, triple ionization of CS 2 is also possible at this photon energy via double Auger decay as discussed by Eland et al 26 Ankerhold et al 27 report a branching ratio for CS 3+ 2 to be about 10% of the total ion yield for ionization by 174 eV photons. Lavollée 20 also observed triple ionization of CS 2 for ionization around S(2p) threshold.…”
