Ionic Liquids: The Neglected Issues

Abstract: There has been an explosion of interest in ionic liquids in the last five years that has resulted in the discovery of a vast number of new ionic liquids with a wide range of interesting applications. Although ionic liquids are invariably described as highly stable green solvents, thorough investigations quantifying their purity, stability, biodegradability, and toxicity have lagged behind the pace of other research in the area. This review addresses these key issues and summarizes the approaches that have been… Show more

“…Scammells et al [7] pointed out in this journal that ionic liquids may not be as 'green' as many authors had claimed, because of several issues which, at the time, had been sorely neglected. They highlighted the dearth of data concerning the biodegradation, toxicity, and methods of recycling the ionic liquids that were being claimed as 'benign solvents'.…”

“…[3][4][5][6] Less understood, but now of great interest, are the associated chemical properties that manifest in the condensed phase such as relative basicity (or acidity), oxidative (or reductive) capacity, thermal stability, electrochemical reactivity, and catalytic or combustion efficiency of the component ions. [7][8][9] Recent interest in room temperature ionic liquids has grown immensely, as their synthetic routes have been optimized. The number of publications involving ionic liquid chemistry has grown exponentially in the past decade.…”

“…The air and moisture-sensitive L 1 Á 4 were prepared in good yields (53Á67%) from the commercially available corresponding alcohols (14,15) by reaction with phosphorus trichloride in diethyl ether in the presence of pyridine (Equation 1, Scheme 6). These ligands were used for the hydroformylation of 1-octene using catalytic precursors system [Rh(a-…”
