Ionic Liquid-Assisted Synthesis of C@ZrSiO4 Ceramic Inclusion Pigment

Abstract: An innovative two-step route was successfully applied to the ionic liquid-assisted synthesis of C@ZrSiO4 ceramic pigments, which is able to reduce the reflux time from many hours to a few minutes. The structure and morphology of the inclusion pigments were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). And the chromatic value of the pigments was measured by the CIE color system. The results show that the pigment in the absence of ionic liquid (IL) exhibited homogeneous sin… Show more

“…The optical properties of ceramic pigments depend on the particle scale and morphology . Hence, the CZS demonstrates deep dark hue, whose L * value is much lower than previously reported, as shown in Figure D (specific parameters are shown in Table ). And then the uniform of the CZS makes each CSs as an independent chromophore.…”

“…Consequently, in order to achieve the same level of tinting strength as the spinel black pigments, the following research interests have gained considerable popularity: (a) breakthroughs in the synthesis method of inclusion black pigments; (b) Carbon as the colorant for the inclusion black pigments, innovation in the selection of carbon source is indispensable. Gradually expanding to various forms of carbon source starting from CB .…”

“…Interestingly, the formation of a core-shell structure can improve the thermal stability of these pigments through the modification of the encapsulation with more stable materials, such as ZrSiO 4 , SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 [22][23][24][25]. For instance, the working temperature of ZrSiO 4encapsulated carbon black via sol-gel-spraying could be effectively increased to 900 • C [22].…”

“…Therefore, APSs with a single fixed color for structural color materials is of value in the development of printed media, displays, and general-use pigments. Inspired by nature, active research has been focused particularly on fabricating elaborately nanostructured APS materials to enable their artificial manufacture. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that artificial APS powder materials tend to appear their natural color due to incoherent multiple scattering . To solve this problem, researchers have found an effective means to enhance the degree of saturation to prepare color productions: the addition of small black materials with broadband absorption in the visible range, such as magnetite, carbon black (CB), and metal microparticles. Generally, micro-nanolevel black materials distributed in APS systems randomly are unstable and could reunite easily due to the high surface energy, and the nonuniform distribution could lead to a significant decrease in brightness. , …”
