Ionic liquid assisted microwave synthesis route towards color-tunable luminescence of lanthanide- doped BiPO4

Abstract: Ln 3+-doped (Ln = Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy) nanoparticles of BiPO4 with a particle size below 10 nm were synthesized in a straightforward manner from the appropriate mixture of the respective metal acetates and the task-specific ionic liquids choline or butylammonium dihydrogen-phosphate by conversion in a laboratory microwave (120 °C, 10 minutes). The ionic liquid acts not only as a solvent and microwave susceptor, but also as the reaction partner and nanoparticle stabilizer. The materials were thoroughly characterized… Show more

“…Unexpectedly, we observe the broad bands between 3250 and 3750 cm -1 and 1250-1600 what confirm the presence of the molecules H 2 O on the surface. The same low temperatures synthetic method applied for LaPO4:Eu 3+gives an access to anhydrous nanophosphates with excellent photophysical properties[6,11]. The absence of water and hydrous compounds was confirmed by IR spectroscopy.…”

“…The studied nano-powdered samples were synthesized according the procedure described earlier in [6,11]. In this synthesis protocole lanthanides precursors, which are the simple lanthanide salts like nitrate or acetate hydrates are converted at relatively low temperature (~140°C) to anhydrous lanthanide phosphate.…”

“…Using a combination of microwave irradiation and ILs, other complex metal structures with enhanced performance were synthesized. Cybinska et al prepared Ln 3+ -doped (Ln = Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy) BiPO 4 NPs with particle sizes <10 nm from the respective metal acetates and choline or butylammonium dihydrogen-phosphate in a microwave at 120 °C for 10 min [76]. In their work, ILs acted as a solvent, microwave susceptor and reaction stabilizer; they also affected particle morphology and size.…”

“…However, volatile organic compounds have hazardous impacts on flora and fauna. To overcome these issues, ionic liquid (IL) assisted methods have been developed as they have high thermal and chemical stability, less volatility, and tunable physicochemical properties, which make them superior to conventional organic solvents (Rogers and Seddon, 2003;Wilkes, 2004;Plechkova and Seddon, 2008;Cybinska et al, 2016). Therefore, ILs are also known as "green" and "designer" solvents (Rogers and Seddon, 2003;Plechkova and Seddon, 2008;Duan et al, 2014).…”
