Ionic Liquid-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization–Mass Spectrometry: Matrices, Microextraction, and Separation

Abstract: Ionic liquids (ILs) have advanced a variety of applications, including matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization–mass spectrometry (MALDI–MS). ILs can be used as matrices and solvents for analyte extraction and separation prior to analysis using laser desorption/ionization–mass spectrometry (LDI–MS). Most ILs show high stability with negligible sublimation under vacuum, provide high ionization efficiency, can be used for qualitative and quantitative analyses with and without internal standards, show high rep… Show more

“…MS depends on the ionization of the viral contents, e.g., protein or RNA. Soft ionization techniques such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) are promising for direct detection of the intact virus [25,41,76,[249][250][251][252][253][254][255][256]. Nanoparticles are essential as the surface for MALDI-MS, i.e., surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS).…”

“…to volatile and hazardous organic solvents, ILs have been widely applied in separation science [10][11][12], analytical chemistry [8,13,14], biomass transformation [15], and organic synthesis [16], among others. Over the past years, carbohydrate chemists have witnessed the use of ILs in a wide variety of aspects [6,7,12].…”

“…ILs are recognized as tunable designer solvents with an enormous number of ion combinations (10 18 ) . As alternatives to volatile and hazardous organic solvents, ILs have been widely applied in separation science , analytical chemistry , biomass transformation , and organic synthesis , among others. Over the past years, carbohydrate chemists have witnessed the use of ILs in a wide variety of aspects .…”

“…Unfortunately, the use of ILMs provides a stronger tendency for alkali metal–ion adduct generation 17 . In addition, the optimization of ILMs is a trial‐and‐error process, and the base‐to‐acid ratio can alter the performance of these materials 18 . Thus, sample preparation is still a bottleneck in achieving reproducible data in MALDI‐MS and MSI analyses.…”
