Ionic effects in self-propelled Pt-coated Janus swimmers

Abstract: Colloidal particles partially coated with platinum and dispersed in H2O2 solution are often used as model self-propelled colloids. Most current data suggest that neutral self-diffusiophoresis propels these particles. However, several studies have shown strong ionic effects in this and related systems, such as a reduction of propulsion speed by salt. We investigate these ionic effects in Pt-coated polystyrene colloids, and find here that the direction of propulsion can be reversed by addition of an ionic surfac… Show more

“…This stresses the role of electrostatics in the system thus discarding neutral diffusiophoresis/osmosis as the main transport mechanism in our system. The importance of electrostatic contributions in the propulsion mechanism of platinum-coated Janus particles has been recently pointed and thoroughly discussed in [43,44].…”

“…A particular class of active colloids is often connected with these potential applications, namely, artificial selfphoretic colloids [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. This is because their fabrication can be well controlled and they appear to be simpler than biological organisms.…”

“…Only the total surface reaction rate has been established [21]. However, it has been shown that there is a dependence of the reactivity on the thickness of the Pt-coating [23].…”

“…Active colloids can be induced using photoactive materials [14]. Partially coated colloidal particles with platinum and dispersed in H 2 O 2 solution are often used as model of self-propelled colloids [15]. The motion of an artificial micro-swimmer that uses chemical reaction catallyzed on its own surface to achieve autonomous propulsion is also experimentally possible [16].…”
