Green energy-storage materials enable the sustainable use of renewable energy and waste heat. As such, a form-stable phase-change nanohybrid (PCN) is demonstrated to solve the fluidity and leakage issues typical of phase-change materials (PCMs). Here, we introduce the advantage of solid-to-gel transition to overcome the drawbacks of typical solid-to-liquid counterparts in applications related to thermal energy storage and regulation. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is form-stabilized with cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) through surface interactions. The cellulosic nanofibrillar matrix is shown to act as an organogelator of highly loaded PEG melt (85 wt %) while ensuring the absence of leakage. CNFs also preserve the physical structure of the PCM and facilitate handling above its fusion temperature. The porous CNF scaffold, its crystalline structure, and the ability to hold PEG in the PCN are characterized by optical and scanning electron imaging, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. By the selection of the PEG molecular mass, the lightweight PCN provides a tailorable fusion temperature in the range between 18 and 65 °C for a latent heat storage of up to 146 J/g. The proposed PCN shows remarkable repeatability in latent heat storage after 100 heating/cooling cycles as assessed by differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal regulation and light-to-heat conversion of the PCN are confirmed via infrared thermal imaging under simulated sunlight and in a thermal chamber, outperforming those of a reference, commercial insulation material. Our PCN is easily processed as a structurally stable design, including three-dimensional, two-dimensional (films), and one-dimensional (filaments) materials; they are, respectively, synthesized by direct ink writing, casting/molding, and wet spinning. We demonstrate the prospects of the lightweight, green nanohybrid for smart-energy buildings and waste heat-generating electronics for thermal energy storage and management.

Gels as compelling soft material shows its promising versatility in actuators, soft electronics, and biomedical sensors. However, most gel materials are too rigid to cope with long‐term changing scenarios and specific needs. Inspired by the switchable behavior of bio‐behavior of muscle, the study reports a thermodynamically controllable and stiffness‐transformative cellulose‐salt gel by simple thermal mixing of hydrous salt, cellulose nanofiber, and polyacrylamide. The achieved cellulosic gel with dynamic microstructure presents an amazing stiffness switchability between crystalline state and melted states of 32.38 to 0.02 MPa, as well as the regulable light transmittance between 41.59% and 93.43%. In addition, this cellulose‐salt gel has excellent thermal controllable behavior. That is, by controlling the crystallization process, the cellulose‐salt gel displays the start‐stop releasing‐energy behaviors on demand. Enabled by these outstanding properties, the study further demonstrates the promising application of cellulose‐salt gel in controllable soft‐rigid coupling thermoelectric device, showing the broader implications for wearable electronics aiming at on‐demand work.

Spatiotemporal Utilization of Latent Heat in Erythritol‐based Phase Change Materials as Solar Thermal Fuels

Solar thermal fuels (STFs) have been particularly concerned as sustainable future energy due to their impressive ability to store solar energy in chemical bonds and controllably release thermal energy. However, currently studied STFs mainly focus on molecule‐based materials with high photochemical activity, toxicity, and compromised features, which greatly restricts their applications in practical scenarios of solar energy utilization. Herein, we present a novel erythritol‐based composite phase change material (PCM) as a new type of STFs with an outstanding capability to store solar energy as latent heat in its stable supercooling state and release thermal energy as needed. This composite PCM with stored thermal energy can be maintained stably at room temperature and subsequently release latent heat as high as 224.9 J/g during the crystallization process triggered by thermal stimuli. Remarkably, solar energy can be converted into latent heat stored in the composite PCM over months. Through mechanical stimulations, the released latent heat can increase the temperature of the composite up to 91 °C. This work presents a new concept of using spatiotemporal storage and release of latent heat in PCMs for solar energy utilization, making it a potential candidate as STFs for developing future clean energy techniques.
