Ion Mobility-High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (IM-HRMS) for the Analysis of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs): Database Compilation and Application to Urine Samples

Abstract: Ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS)-derived collision cross section (CCS) values can serve as a valuable additional identification parameter within the analysis of compounds of emerging concern (CEC) in human matrices. This study introduces the first comprehensive database of DTCCSN2 values of 148 CECs and their metabolites including bisphenols, alternative plasticizers (AP), organophosphate flame retardants (OP), perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS), and others. A total of 311 ions were included in the database… Show more

“…Citrates have relatively lower TW CCS N2 values compared to phthalates, adipates, and sebacate-based plasticizers with similar m / z values. This is may be due to the compact side chains in their structures, as demonstrated by Belva et al 28 …”

“…Because CCS is a measurement related to the size, shape, and charge of an ion, 43 different relationships between CCS versus m / z have been observed for compounds presenting different structural characteristics. 16 , 25 , 28 Correlations between the CCS and m / z of the commonly used additives (plasticizers, antioxidants, and photoinitiators) and oligomers studied here are shown in Figure 3 , and their regression equations are shown in Table S6 . Figure 3 A presents the TW CCS N2 versus m / z relationship of 57 ions from 49 plasticizers, with different colors denoting different types of plasticizers.…”

“…IMS-QTof has proved to be a powerful tool for the analysis of small molecules. , The relatively high mass resolving power coupled to an ion mobility separation dimension increases peak capacity and can separate coeluting compounds. This is demonstrated in Figure , which should make clear the separation of the coeluting compounds quercetin 3-glucoside and rutin.…”

“…A total of 2145 experimental traveling wave CCS ( TW CCS N2 ) and drift tube CCS ( DT CCS N2 ) values were collected from seven recent publications, 27 , 29 , 38 , 39 , 43 , 53 , 54 of which 1425 and 720 CCS values were for [M + H] + and [M + Na] + ions, respectively ( Table S1 ). The CCS values in the publication of Song and co-workers 43 were experimentally measured by injecting standards of chemicals associated with plastic food packaging.…”

“… 55 Additionally, many pesticides contain halogens in their structure, as such, the predictions of CCS values for halogenated compounds will be more accurate by including the pesticides in the CCS data set. The last two publications 27 , 54 mainly contain CCS values for organophosphorus flame retardants, compounds with a phosphate structure, which are common additives used in plastic materials. Since only three organophosphorus flame retardants were included in the previous self-built CCS database, 43 the addition of the CCS values from these two publications significantly expanded the chemical diversity of the current study.…”
