Ion Irradiation Studies of Soft Magnetic Metallic Glasses

Abstract: Finemet and Vitrovac• R 6025 metallic glasses were irradiated by light (N) and heavy (Au and Ta) ions at different energies from 110 keV to 250 MeV/u (MeV per mass unit) and fluences from 1 × 10 11 ions/cm 2 to 1 × 10 17 ions/cm 2 . They were analysed by the Mössbauer spectrometry and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Qualitative differences were observed between the radiation effects caused by light and heavy ions.

“…Its final value of 0.32% is more than twice as high as the value at the fluence of 2 Â 10 12 ions cm À2 (0.15%). It should be noted that a similar effect of a sudden change was observed for the magnetic susceptibility in the A alloy irradiated with the fluence of 2 Â 10 12 ions cm À2 [10,11,36]. Based on the magnetic susceptibility measurements, it was found that the A alloy is magnetically stable up to the fluence of 2 Â 10 12 ions cm À2 .…”

“…However, results obtained during the last two decades pointed out that irradiation did induce modifications of MGs properties. In particular, it has been observed that the specimen geometry [5,6], thermal stability and crystallization process [7], magnetic anisotropy [8], shape of hysteresis loops [9], magnetic susceptibility [10,11] and mechanical characteristics such as strength [12] of MGs can be affected by ion irradiation. Such changes might lead to a malfunction of devices that use MGs if operated, for example, in a new generation of high-power, heavy-ion accelerators.…”

“…Details of these experiments have been reported in (10,11). It is evident that VITROPERM ® is radiation harder against heavy ions than VITROVAC ® (direct comparison is possible especially via the data for Au ions at 11.1 MeV/A).…”

“…Figure 1 shows ionization density and dpa for VITROPERM R 800. Data for VITROVAC R 6025 can be found in [8]. In all cases, the range of ions is longer than the sample thickness, that is about 23 µm.…”
