Ion‐dependent metabolic responses of Vicia faba L. to salt stress

Abstract: Salt-affected farmlands are increasingly burdened by chlorides, carbonates, and sulfates of sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Intriguingly, the underlying physiological processes are studied almost always under NaCl stress. Two faba bean cultivars were subjected to low- and high-salt treatments of NaCl, Na SO , and KCl. Assimilation rate and leaf water vapor conductance were reduced to approximately 25-30% without biomass reduction after 7 days salt stress, but this did not cause severe carbon shortage. The equi… Show more

“…Hahm et al [43] also reported that reducing RWC is an ideal action for helping plants to resist osmotic stress. The accumulation of proline under salinity stress is considered to be an indicator in several plant species [14,44]. This compound acts in the protection of cellular components by dehydration, maintaining the membrane structure and acting as a free radical scavenger [45].…”

“…The TCA cycle plays a central role in energy metabolism. A decline in the content of the TCA cycle intermediates is frequently observed in glycophytes under salt stress (Gong et al , ; Sanchez et al , ; Zhao et al , ; Richter et al , ). In all genotypes tested here (i.e.…”
